DESCRIPTION OF SCALE HEALTH ACTION TEAM
BY SUSAN GRACE (ESL Educator)
Overview of the Health Team
"The SCALE Health Team this year consisted of four ESL students and one teacher, myself, who met once a week for a separate health content class to learn about health issues of the students' choice. The topics selected for this year were stress, nutrition, and exercise. The first phase of the project was a time to study and learn together about these topics. To do this, I collected, and developed materials that we used in class each week. After exploring these topics, the team moved to the action phase of the project in which they, became the health educators for other SCALE students. After a brief introduction to teaching, they developed a workshop on stress and materials for it. They then presented their workshop to other SCALE ESL classes. We finished the year by participating in the Ideas in Action: A conference on Health & Literacy. "
