More
about Malden
|
We had an interview with Chris
Fallon, the state representative for Malden last week. In this interview
he told us some information about this city. The city of Malden was
founded about 350 years ago. It was founded by people from the old
continent. This is a city north of Boston. It’s next to Melrose,
Saugus, Revere, Everett and Medford. Now Richard Howard is the mayor
of Malden.

Today Malden is developing. It has
a lot of commercial industries, especially wholesale. There are a lot of
successful projects here, for example the subway was built in the mid 1970s.
It is easy and convenient for people to go everywhere. The economic development
has an optimistic, bright future. Why? They are building new
schools in Malden. Now they are also building TeleCom City.
It will have good training for people. It will have 8000-9000 new
jobs and a technology park for Malden, Medford, and Everett, near Wellington
Circle.

Malden also has a lot of important
historical places. For example, some places in Malden were part of
the Underground Railroad before the Civil War. There isn’t a museum in
Malden but the public library has some history of Malden and an art gallery.
I live in Malden and I love Malden.

The representative said the population
in Malden is about 55,000 right now. In Malden, the income for a family
of four people is about $35,000/year. Malden is a middle class city.
In Malden now there are 7 elementary and middle schools. In 1999
the Beebe School was opened. Next year the Glenwood School will be
closed, because now they are building 2 new schools. There is a big high
school in Malden. Every year 60% of the students from Malden High
school go to college and 10-20% go to 2 year colleges.

Immigrants and Malden
Representative Fallon said
that in the past there were a lot of Jewish immigrants and today not so
many in Malden. Before there were a lot of Irish and Italian immigrants
and they continue in Malden today. Now there are also different Asian
groups, Haitian, Central American and Caribbean immigrants in Malden.
In the high school there are 42-45 different languages. There are many new
immigrants in Malden every month. Rep. Fallon wasn’t exactly sure
how many, but as an example, he told us that 150 new students went to high
school from January to the middle of February. Many of the new students
are immigrants. There are about 15-20 different religions in Malden,
for example: Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, etc.

Representative Fallon said that immigrants
have a very positive influence and they bring diversity. There are new
ideas from them. They have enthusiasm and energy. They bring many different
perspectives on freedom, and new religious concepts. Immigrants remind
him how lucky we are to have freedom and constitutional rights. Immigrants
remind us how good we have it here. Immigrants are very very important
for him.
He always asks immigrants to call
him whenever they meet trouble, but they don’t because in some countries,
the government tells people what to do but in this country people tell
the government what to do. Immigrants don’t know that and they are sometimes
afraid of seeing government and they are afraid of seeing him, too, although
he always encourages them. Immigrants don’t make his work difficult.
