When I came to another country to study, I was totally happy about
changes, but after some time I realised whole situation and began to
feel lonely, unwanted, unsafe. I haven't found many close friends here
to talk with, so I had to find the way to help myself. These are the
things I do when I get depressed:

• hold on my biggest dream of life, think about it, search the way to
make it closer
• write my friends and family from my home country
• imagine people I could meet here in this country to have a good time
and make friends
• write a diary
• search the Internet for news
• watch Youtube for funny movies
• write about how I wish to feel and how I should live to have less stress
• find a person and try to help him, make a surprise.
• go to work (it really helps)
• imagine my future life (positively)
• listen to my childhood music
• try to occupy myself with something, anything just not to sit in one
place and stare at the wall as I used to do :)
• write songs

I have been quite stressed out lately, I don't know why. I just drove down to the beach overlooking the Pacific Ocean and sat on a log, closed my eyes, listened to the waves crash and smiled as the smell of a families beach fire reached my nose. It literally melted away the accumulated stress of my week.

Whenever I am stressed out I try to sit back and determine what is causing my stress. Most of the time I realize that I stress myself out on things that shouldn't even be bothering me. Other times I would just take a bicycle ride in the cool Maya Mountains of Belize or just go down to the river and do some swiming or fishing.

When I feel stress I work in my garden. A time of silence and a sense of getting all of my thoughts back into one order is important.

Dear David,

As you know we have been looking at your pages about stress recently. It is something we have all had to deal with so we were interested to read about people whose experiences are similar to our own and would like to tell you about some of our own ideas for dealing with stress.

Sandra has cassettes of Chinese music and dolphin sounds that help her to relax. Evariste also listens to dolphins. There seems to be something about water and dolphins that is very relaxing. Sandra also likes to light candles and have bubble baths. She also does yoga. Fatma watches soaps on TV. Harry goes to a Buddhist Centre on Mondays to learn about unwinding and to learn to meditate. He recommends it to anyone and says you donÕt have to be a Buddhist to go along (he isnÕt!) Harry sometimes finds people wind him up and he has to walk away so he doesnÕt use aggression. What he learns at the Buddhist Centre helps him to control his anger. We all think it is hard to concentrate on work if weÕre stressed though some of us get on with housework like cleaning. Some people find other physical activity helps: Evariste goes running in the park, and he also goes to discos.

David, we enjoyed chatting to you live via the Internet about stress, though we found the online chat quite stressful!!! Jo got a bit stressed trying to set up the technology and when we were actually online chatting to you , we felt a bit stressed because we had to try to type and read very quickly. However, it was very enjoyable and exciting to talk to someone on the other side of the world!

Thank you

When I feel stress, I pray to G' d. My favorite book is the Salms. Before I begin to read,
I close my eyes and image a special trip to beautiful place, like a beach or a mountain.
And after a few minutes, I open my eyes and start to read the Salms.
I wish good luck for your research,

Sincerely,

What do I do when I'm stressed out!

I'm a 17-year-old medical student here in Dubai.

When I'm stressed out, there is this peaceful spot I drive to or go to this
little corner in my university campus. Only a couple people know about both
these places. I sit there and think or talk to myself and if I want to I
can also lie down without being disturbed. When things seem really hard I
also cry there. Both these places are really beautiful.

The first is by the beach side close to a Sheikh's palace. It is surrounded
by thick palm trees and huge rocks which forms a sort of cove in which I
sit. This is my hideout from the world.

The second place is a little flower bed no one really knows about because
it is behind two storage rooms and almost inacessible.

When I'm not able to go to any of these places I throw myself on my bed, or
if in class I scribble all my frustrations on paper. Or talk my problems
out with God. This all really shows that I need a lot of quiet and to be by
myself.

Thanks for listening.

I work midnight at University of Michigan and I was going to school for four hours days and four days a week this past winter and Spring.  On Fridays, I was one of the editors for the newsletter for stars. The newsletters are for the learners in our area, they come out once a month, plus I am a learner in the Literacy program, but now I will be doing other thing with other learners and will be doing poems in August and meeting with other learners for our monthly meeting which I enjoying doing volunteer doing things for the Literacy.

When I am stressed out I like to read good books or go out by myself and go to the malls, just look at different things. But you know what really relaxing me? just working on the Literacy Stars papers and being with other learners, just having fun about talking with them about the Stars news, what we are going to put in the newsletters and when we are finishing for that day, I feel good and then I am relaxed.

When I worked in an office in Japan, I had a very bad headache. Initially, I didn't think the headache was from stress but it was. One of my colleagues in the same section, who was much older than us, became our boss. Some colleagues including me didn't like her method as a boss. She was too much! Unfortunately my desk was opposite to her. She didn't like that we talked to each other except about work. She seemed to check us every time. We felt afraid of her. I was not comfortable to work at the desk. At first, my shoulders got tense badly and my headache was getting worse. My parents were worried about me so I went to hospital. The doctor said that it was a cold or a stress!!! I was sure it was definitely stress!! Japanese people say, we normally cope with our stresses by talking to friends or family, drink alcohol, sing a song (Karaoke!), go shopping, do sports and do something you like. Some people go to have an acupuncture or a spring (spa) to be relaxed. I used to go to a Japanese pub with my friends and talk about my problem or spend money!

Some people drink wine, eat a lot of candies and junk food or smoke cigarettes to relax. These are not good for your health......

Be careful.  Try to find a healthy way to relax!
